What a granite monument base does

Supports the die or tablet: The base provides a wider stone footprint beneath the upright die. Its top joint, overall width, depth and height must coordinate with the tablet and the intended setting method.
Creates visual proportion: Base projection, height, edge treatment and finish affect the monument's appearance. A base should be reviewed as part of the complete design rather than selected only by width.
Provides space for accessories: Some assemblies place vases, flower holes, dowel holes or other accessories in or beside the base. Their size, position and drilling requirements belong on the approved drawing.
Is not the cemetery foundation: The visible granite base normally sits on a separately prepared foundation or support system. Foundation materials, depth and installation requirements are controlled by the cemetery and installer.

There is no universal headstone base size. The die, cemetery limits, design and installation plan determine the correct specification.

Width, depth and height: State all three labeled dimensions for the base. Do not combine them with the die dimensions or rely on feet-and-inches notation without identifying the direction of each value.
Die-to-base relationship: Confirm the intended projection around the die, joint dimensions and whether the monument is centered or intentionally offset. The approved drawing should show the relationship clearly.
Polished flat top: A polished top can create contrast and is frequently specified on monument bases. Identify whether the full top, exposed wash or only selected surfaces receive polish.
Rock-pitched or finished sides: Base sides may be rock pitched, steeled, sawn, polished or otherwise finished. Write out the finish for the front, back, ends, top and any exposed margins.

Identify the matching stone: Provide the granite color for both base and die and state when close block matching is important, especially for additions or multi-component memorials.
Send the complete component list: List the die, base, vases, markers and other stones individually, including quantity, dimensions, finishes, holes, joints and design references.
Verify cemetery and installer requirements: Confirm maximum width, base projection, foundation, pinning or doweling rules and installation responsibility before approving fabrication.
Request weight and shipping details: Final stone, dimensions and fabrication determine weight. Confirm packing, palletization, receiving equipment and delivery restrictions for the completed order.
